There was a wry smile at the numerous suggestions of the appropriate rental charge for each tenant's 'back-side', but this turned into a quite inappropriate snigger as Sir Edward advises his teenage son what to do about several widows leasing his lands. Each is a slight variation on 'Use her well as your father has done, and consider charging five shillings entry to her valuable back-side'.
I think when paraphrasing in modern parlance I should amend this to 'treat her kindly as I did, and consider charging an additional land rent for direct access from the street to the garden', but where's the fun in that?
