Lucky find...

The Life and Limb is getting a bit large to handle now, but we're plowing on!  Found another lovely link to the location ( ooh, unintended alliteration!).  Doctor, botanist, astronomer and former resident of the Square John Birkbeck Nevins (whose papers are in the University Special Collections and Archives) translated and edited ( and made notes to) The Prescriber’s Complete Handbook: Comprising the Principles of the Art of Prescribing by Trousseau and Reveil (1852).

This is one of the books listed in the United States' Army Surgeon's Manual: For the Use of Medical Officers (1864). So the surgeons of the American Civil War featured in the exhibition had a book by an Abercromby Square resident on their reading list!

Isn't serendipity great :-)

Dr Hawkes

Interesting snippet I can across about a former resident of the Square while researching the medical angle for Life and Limb.

Alfred Edward Hawkes worked at the Homeopathic Hospital at Neuilly sur Seine in France, as Chief of Medicine during WW1, from 1914 to 1916.

Dr Hawkes worked closely with Frantz Hartmann (a World renowned Paris surgeon) in setting up a highly organized surgical installation. Surgical cases totaled one hundred and twenty two, many fractures, and shrapnel fragments from the fighting lines.

‘Among the eighty medical cases, ten of typhoid were treated, and none died. Chronic diseases of the alimentary canal there were eight. Cases of respiratory affliction amounted to forty. The remainder of medical cases were of heart disease, renal disease, and acute and chronic rheumatism.’

I'm pleased to be able to report things are tying up nicely, and some of my previous work on Abercromby Square will be incorporated into the exhibition materials. Its nice to see the first showing of a few bits and pieces of research, and with my work hat on, its great that we're going to be able to highlight some research from current postgraduate students as well. Should be a great show. I'll keep you posted!

Not exactly having the best of days today, and have sadly come to the conclusion I'm going to have to accept the core research and writing up of the Abercormby Square book are going to have to go slightly on the back burner for a while.

I'd like to put it top of the list obviously, but there are quite a number of time sensitive projects I'm involved in at the minute, and I don't want to spread myself too thin and not do any of them justice.  Several work things, but also two projects that involve the square and the American Civil War, and I need to complete them first before I can get back to writing up the book stuff.  It will be useful material to have anyway, but its annoying that I'm having to focus on the 1860s when I was doing so well working through chronologically.

On the bright side for you, there's be more info coming soon, and perhaps a bit of insight into planning an event and all it entails Something for you to look forward to then!

Everything going swimmingly, and I'm just searching out additional materials for the exhibition.  While not primarily audio based, I'm hoping to find something by WH Jude, organist, composer and occupant of the Square.

He was composing shortly after the civil war, and I'm hoping he might have written something for one of the pianist-amputees who were starting emerge and gain some popularity.  No luck so far but would be a wonderful linking up of the aspects of abercromby square and one of the the themes of the exhibition if there was something!

Apologies for the short post but I'm feeling rather dodgy this evening and not in top form. Not that you care my lovely audience, you want information don't you?

Well, plans for the Life and Limb exhibition going very well, and we've got some terrific new artwork that will be on show as part of it. The artist (Angel Martin) has created some wonderful steampunk civil war pieces, with some great iconography for Stephen Crane, Walk Whitman and Luisa May Alcott, as well as more military based art.  I'll let you know more soon but do check out the gallery link above for a flavour of the style!
