It was relatively short lived though, with the Danelaw splitting the country, fighting occurring on the Wirral in particular as the Mersey was at the border of the newly split country, shared between the Anglo Saxon and Norse kings. It was all for naught though as William the Conquerer ( known on the continent as William the Bastard for his lineage, and no doubt referred to the same way locally for different reasons) came and took the country for the Normans.
There are some very useful and interesting hints about the land prior to invasion in the Domesday Book however. Before King William handed ownership of the Merseyside area to his Norman and Angevin allies, the 1066 survey of resources, shows that both Anglo Saxons and Vikings had been the ‘Lords of the Manor’, sharing control of what would be Liverpool and living side by side.
