As an explanation and insight into the research process its wothwhile mentioning how important it can be in not just settling for one edition of a book. I've already gleaned several useful bits from the 3rd, 6th and 10th editions, all of which differ in some important respects. The descriptive sections are particularly useful in tracking dates for parts of the city being built, when other sources are absent.
I don't suppose anyone out there has a copy of Thomas Kaye's 'The Stranger in Liverpool' 5th edition they wouldn't mind me having a look at? Has to be the fifth edition though.
