Very much enjoying the biography of the Earles though. About halfway through, and very tempted to get distracted be several passages of interest. A lot of books cover the slave trading period in detail of course, but the estimate of 3000 elephants a year killed for ivory at that time is one I hadn't come across before, or registered anyway. As is the reference to some of the black African slavers from the source ports sending their sons to Liverpool to be educated, and staying with the families of Liverpool slaver captains. I'm sure there must be some fascinating stories there.
