And no, I'm genuinely not making this up!
Bishop Chavasse ( 19 Abercromby Square) also had a monkey that used to travel round on his shoulder too, and eat nuts out of his pocket.
And no, I'm genuinely not making this up!

From the Manchester Times MANCHESTER ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN COMPANY - The above company have received from Mrs Repley [sic], of Abercromby Square, Liverpool, a present of a fine male leopard. The animal is very playful, and so tame that strangers may handle it with impugnity. Mrs Julia Ripley lived at 21 Abercromby Square between about 1827 and 1862. Rumours that the leopard was co-resident are as yet unstubstantiated. Though not as impossible as you might think! Flash fixed! :-)
Unfortunately two of the first occupants of the square are currently proving very tricky to get much beyond the basic facts. John Gordon and Nicholas Megraw, where are your histories? :-( I have a few Megraw details (though most not verified yet) as he had a tailor's business on Bold St (Megraw and Heron), but Mr Gordon is proving quite elusive. He must have been a 'name' to get one of the first houses but his claims to fame are eluding me so far. If anyone knows him, do give me a shout! I'm afraid Adobe Flash is constantly crashing with firefox again. Uploads will carry on once I get the bugger fixed.
Recently refurbished entrance to what was number 22 Abercromby Square, first occupied by Charles Pole, then the Hollinshead family.
Tricky bit of the first draft now. I've been through the pre-Square history of the ground, and am putting together the first section 1802-1820, but how to present the people?
I don't want to just do a list of biogs if I can help it, and obviously the amount you can write about each person varies, but the thematic links are proving trickier than imagined. It isn't a problem to link the major figures, but how to incorporate other interesting occupants without it seeming to be a shoehorn job? Just re-watched the Timeteam special on the old Liverpool dock on Youtube. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Wonder if they'd come and dig up the basements in the square :-) ?
